Advanced data handling for plasma profile control in JT-60

Recent years, plasma current profile (j-profile) control has been newly proposed to avoid instabilities in the high normalized-beta plasma. In particular, for the real-time profile feedback control, the control period should be roughly less than several tens of ms, including data communication among relating systems. In order to minimize data transfer time,the profile data being a function of time and position is required to decrease its data size for efficient data handling. A profile data,defined as 3-dimension time series data (q,R,Z,t), was reduced by introducing normalized minor radius rho in place of (R,Z). Data handling for profile control will be presented with their technical issues, together with computing hardware engineering.

Current status of experimental study and device modifications in JT-60U

Since JT-60 is expected to explore more advanced operation scenarios, the discharge pulse length and the duration time of additional NBI/RF heating were extended to 65 s and 30 s/60 s, respectively, in 2003. The experimental campaign in 2003-2004 has ended up with the following significant results: (a) The high bootstrap current ratio of 75 % was sustained for 7.4 s in an R/S plasma. (b) The quasi-steady state beta value was increased to 3.0 for a pulse of 6.2 s with NTM suppression by ECCD, etc. For further exploration toward high performance plasmas, the following modifications have been conducted: (1) To minimize the power loss at the region of toroidal field ripple, the 8Cr ferritic steel tiles are being equipped on the first wall of the vacuum vessel. (2) A new current profile reproduction method will be installed in the plasma control system. In the symposium, the current status of plasma experimental study will be presented together with on-going device modifications in JT-60.

Current profile control and improved confinement in JT-60 Tokamak plasmas

In a tokamak, one of toroidal shaped magnetic confinement systems, a large toroidal current induced in a high temperature plasma produces helical magnetic fields to confine the plasma itself. Therefore, the spatial structure of confining magnetic fields can be determined by measuring the profile of the plasma current. This can lead to the understanding of the transport and stability properties of the plasma. In this review, a novel technique using the motional Stark effect to measure the current profile in the JT-60 tokamak is shown. With the aid of this technique, a new operational mode of a tokamak, with which the plasma confinement can be substantially improved, has been discovered. Recent experimental results of confinement improvement with the current profile control are presented.
